Pele and Hiiaka; a myth from Hawaii eBook Nathaniel Bright Emerson Reviews
Excellent study tool for serious students of Hula
A good Hawaiian read
The classic story of love, betrayal, death and life... A Hawaiian classic, Aloha ke Akua,
If you enjoy Hawaiiana, myths and legends of any kind, this is an informative look at two of Hawaii's most prominent deities.
Mr Emerson has done a fantastic job of presenting the Hi'iaka saga and with all his footnotes it makes it very interesting and adds credibility to his research. For those studying Hawaiian history or mythology it is a must read.
I've read it more than once. Each time I learn new things. Such as when Maui drew from the ocean bed using his magic hook Manaiakalani on page 105. Later I met a Kumu hula whose name Manaiakalani.. wow.. to learn of - Hi'iaka was accompanied by Wahine-oma'o--the woman in green--a woman as beautiful as herself.. when you also read Unwritten Literature of Hawaii, by Nathaniel B. Emerson.. great stories.. If you are familiar with Joseph Campbell and his Hero's Journey outline.. These books will be a joy and a pleasure.
A tremendous piece of the mythology of Hawaii. A score for kindle also. To read a 1915 translation of a timeless piece of pre-European contact mythology in electronic format! The writer here does a fantastic job of translating & presenting the piece while still offering the original Hawaiian language text. Great job. The only criticism would be when generating the e format some inconsistencies & misspellings occurred. The e format text also has an odd arrangement of the footnotes mid text. None the less it is a must for any Hawaiian studies enthusiast, kama'aina, malihini, or lover of the island I've come to know as a home if sorts Hawai'i.
